Different...not wrong...

"Mommy... you did it all wrong!"

Lily is clutching a box and eyeing me with disdain. She is four, she is serious. I have obviously failed to meet her expectations. How could I??!

"But you said you loved the cake just a few minutes ago!"

"That was before I saw you did it all wrong!"

My cakey heart is broken.

Let me explain how this all started.

Now, what you have to know about me and my cake making is, I tend to source my inspiration from pretty much everywhere, from books, cloth, paper, napkins, etc.

This time, I had ordered some products from an online shop specializing in American products. As a thank you, they sent me a box of "Be my Valentine" treats, which is basically a vanilla version of a Swiss Roll (by the way, no such thing as a Swiss Roll in Switzerland). After flipping it over, having consumed 5 of them at record speed, and slowly getting over my shock at how many calories I had just inhaled, I saw this Valentine's day card, and knew this box hadn't just been sent to destroy my diet. This was my next cake, and my first blog post!

Thing is, leaving it exactly the same is, well, for lack of a better word, Blah. It is just like getting a cake order, with an attached picture of the cake you should reproduce. Boring! If I can't come up with the original idea myself, I want to at least make it different, mine! I want to put my stamp on it, make people think, yeah, that is Heidi's style. Different, not wrong!

So this is the cake I came up with. When I explained to her that making it different made it more special, she understood. I have a smart little girl. She makes her momma proud.

So to those of you out there reading, I ask you this... how would you have made this cake? Would it have been cake? Or something else entirely? I challenge you to make your own version with your own style! If enough of you comment that you have, I will have a share day on my Facebook and share my favorites with everyone! I sure hope you will give it a try!

In the meantime, here is how I made the giant button characters!I mixed CMC into my Massa Ticino Sugarpaste to make sure it would dry hard. I stuck the characters on with melted Candy Melts.

(Because we don't see it well enough, the small cutter is 2 1/4in, 58mm, the large is 3 7/16in, 88mm, or 3 sizes larger than the small)
I used the square cutter, just to know where to cut my circles.

Cone tool and dresden tool to make indentations.

Make two tiny lines in your sideburn with your dresden tool. Roll up a ball of sugar paste into a long teardrop. Stick on the Button and make hair lines with your dresden tool.

Let me know if you need any help with the instructions :)

Thanks for stopping by :)

    1. Hello! How wonderful that you want to play along! Ok, so I have no idea how many people will read this and want to play along, but I am thinking that on Valentine's day I could do the share day for all the cakes? I am not quite sure how to do this on the blog, so I would do it on my Facebook page. Does that sound ok?

    1. Hey Jean, thanks for your comment! I pretty much left one end a bit straighter and dipped it in very little water and stuck it in some part of the button. I also pushed it in in other places where it toched the button. If nothing worked, I used a mini amount of candy melts to stick it. Like the upper leg of the boy button, it wouldn't stay in place, so in that geove at the bottom, I put in the melted candy melts with a toothpick and stuck the wire in. Clean off any overspill with your findüger! 😊
